We Need Lawyers That Look Like Us...
February 17, 2018
Despite creating change for three years while in law school, the USF's San Francisco Foghorn finally celebrates the success of the Dreamer Fund and its founder, Monica Valencia.
Monica is a firm believer in creating your own platforms for change. In order to do that, you have to recognize an issue and try to solve it. Although Monica and her team work incredibly hard to raise funds for undocumented law students, it is not always easy to get support.
Through the Dreamer Fund, Monica hopes to work with both private and public universities to facilitate a conversation on the admission & financial aid protocols afforded to graduate-level undocumented students. It is through this advocacy that they have been able to create meaningful change in the last two years.
As lawyers, one must advocate passionately for their clients. Monica believes that you must also become your own advocate and take the models used in Rebellious Lawyering by Gerald Lopez, to affect change and also to get people to listen.
